In The Master's Hand

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

"This word came to Jeremiah from Adonai: "Get up, and go down to the potter's house; there, I will tell you more." So I went down to the house of the potter; and there he was, working at the wheels. Whenever a pot he made came out imperfect, the potter took the clay and made another pot with it, in whatever shape suited him. Then the word of Adonai came to me: "House of Isra'el, can't I deal with you as the potter deals with his clay? — Says Adonai. Look! You, house of Isra'el, are the same in my hand as the clay in the potter's hand." Jeremiah 18:1-6

As children of God, we are all “clay” that is in the hands of the Master Potter. And just like the clay depicted in this passage, we are clay with imperfections. But even with those imperfections, God does not throw us out to start with new clay. He takes that same clay and the vessel that it was with all of its flaws, He begins to shape and mold it into another pot; into the shape that suits him.

It is essential to see the depth of God’s love towards us that he would continue to work with us as a potter does with clay, but the sad thing is God did not cause the imperfections in the pot. We create them— And often no matter how much He reaches out to us to hold us and shape us, we respond to Him like the children of Israel did in verse 12 of the same chapter that says,

“It's hopeless! We will stick to our own plans; each of us will stubbornly follow his own evil desires!”

We make this same statement because we often think that the standard is too high to achieve, or even more we proudly believe that OUR way is better or makes more sense, or is more comfortable than to submit ourselves to the hand of God. Even OUR “good intentions” can be put into the category of evil if it goes against His word or His commands to us.

And beloved this should not be so— God so desires to do good to us and through us, but it is our own actions that keep Him from doing so, and we end up like that pot with imperfections that keep us from reaching our full potential in God. Beloved, there is NO better place to be than in the Hands of the Master Potter. So I encourage you to submit yourselves to Him that so loves you!
